Sculpting With Monster Cutie

This week we depart from traditional illustration to talk a little about customizing urban vinyl designer toys and making your own with some sculpting materials.

We take a brief look at Super Sculpey, Paperclay, Milliput, and Magic Sculpt and how you can use them in your customizing projects.

    As far as heat guns go, Wal-Mart has a cheapy one for like $20. It’s one temperature, but it holds up well to abuse.

    Also, I’m not sure how this would work with the air dry stuff or with the sculpey, but I know that rubbing alcohol can help smooth out certain clays. It works by slightly melting the very top surface of the clay, so it can be smoothed out.

    Look me up when you start molding stuff. I might be able to offer some tips. I’ve been working on refining my moldmaking all summer, and I have it down to a science with SmoothOn products. I’m actually giving a few moldmaking demos to the sculpture kids at UAH in November.

    I use Terpnoid to smooth out bumps and stuff which is an odorless paint thinner. I will definitely bug you when it comes time to mold stuff. I foresee great messes in my future!
